The viola d'amore was an almost forgotten instrument. Because of a new interest in the alt violin or viola, it came to life again. The instrument is very well suited for virtuoso music. It has a total of 14 strings of which only 7 are struck. The other strings run underneath the touch and have a kind of sympathizing function. As they are tuned one octave higher, they co­sound with the struck strings.
